Since 1979 when Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD., founded the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester, MA, there has been a growing interest within the fields of medicine and psychology about the delivery of mindfulness-based approaches for a variety of physical and mental illnesses.  There are now many clinical studies that point to the efficacy and value of mindfulness in decreasing physical and psychological symptoms.

Susan Woods, MSW, LICSW & Mark Lau, PhD
April 25-26, 2010
Vancouver, Canada

This two-day training will highlight the place of the therapist’s own mindfulness practice in facilitating the process of inquiry in the MBCT program. The workshop will examine the themes, rationales, intentions, and skills for each of the eight MBCT sessions with a focus on the delivery of inquiry. We will examine the implication of a present moment directed focus that supports awareness and compassion in the articulation of the inquiry process and how that is embodied by the teacher.

This two-day training is for professionals interested in the interface of mindfulness in clinical treatment.  This program is both didactic and experiential.  The role and usefulness of mindfulness-based interventions in clinical practice is the subject of research and discussion. What is less understood is the role of a personal mindfulness practice for clinicians who seek to utilize mindfulness-based approaches in their work.  We will discuss the structure and delivery of the MBCT program and practice various MBCT skills as well as create space for periods of personal mindfulness practice.  If one takes the view that mindfulness is more than a prescriptive technique and is a valid means by which to live, then the potential transformative aspect of this way of being for the clinician is a significant factor in the delivery of mindfulness-based approaches.

mindfulness based cognitive therapy training offered by Susan L. Woods of Silver Birch Counseling and Psychotherapy, Stowe VermontThis retreat/training is an opportunity to explore the relevance of mindfulness in our personal and professional lives.  The heart of these four days lies in exploring how the embodiment of mindfulness practice can not only inform our personal lives, but transform how we experience our relationship to our professional lives. We ask the question: What if I live my life as practice?  What would my work look like?

This training is both experiential and didactic, and it invites group discussion and provides time for self-reflection.  The training is appropriate for therapists, clinicians, educators, healthcare professionals, nutritionists, and yoga instructors who want to strengthen a personal mindfulness practice and develop mindfulness-based skills with clients, patients, students and others in their lives.
